Fund Your Workshop 2021

• Staff and students at AMSI Member Institutions can apply
• Proposals are judged on a competitive basis by AMSI’s Scientific Advisory Committee and representatives of AustMS
• AustMS provides an annual subvention to support regular meetings held by Special Interest Groups. Therefore an AustMS contribution will not normally be provided to workshop applications made by AustMS Special Interest Groups

Note: Only in exceptional circumstances will support be provided near the time of the Annual Conference of the Australian Mathematical Society being held in another city.

• You will be notified of AMSI and AustMS/ANZIAM funding outcomes separately

• Each committee containing more than three organisers should include representatives from more than one AMSI Member, a Member of AustMS and an early-career researcher.
• AMSI strongly recommends the inclusion of at least one woman on the organising committee. This has been shown to boost female participation.
• To aid with communication between funding bodies and the organising committee, a lead applicant must be identified.

• The conference or meeting must be open to all members of AMSI, AustMS and ANZIAM
• Registration fees must be charged for face-to-face events. The minimum registration fee, before applicable discounts, should normally be $25 per day.
• Discounted rates must offered to AMSI, AustMS and ANZIAM members. This includes at least a 20% reduction in registration for members of AustMS, with a further reduction for members of the Society who have free membership or pay the reduced rate subscription.

• Applications must indicate other sources of sponsorship
• Unless an alternative prior arrangement is made with the conference or meeting organisers, any profits up to the value of the grant are to be returned to the AustMS

• It is a strict condition that final reports must be received within 90 days after the event for payment. Reporting must be submitted via the online reporting form.
• Portions of your final report may be used in the AustMS Gazette, AMSI website and other publications. For full details please refer to the organisers’ guidelines (please note that guidelines may not reflect current changes; email queries to funding@amsi.org.au).
• A financial statement and conference or meeting report must be submitted via the online reporting process on completion of the conference or meeting.
• A list of those who attended must be submitted, along with the report, on the template provided after the event.

• The meeting or conference should be advertised on AMSI, AustMS, SSAI and American Mathematical Society websites and in the AustMS Gazette.
• The event must be clearly advertised as an activity supported by AMSI and/or the Australian Mathematical Society.

• National benefit of the event must be clearly identified in the application
• For AMSI funding, 50% of domestic attendees must be from three or more AMSI Member Institutions outside of the host university. Should the condition not be met for funded applications the level of support may be subject to renegotiation before payment is made.
• For maths events AMSI recommends organisers contact the AustMS office to request a list of AustMS members who identify through MathSciNet codes with the themes of the workshop. Organisers can then issue personal and group invitations to prospective participants. This may help improve female attendance.

• The AMSI R&HE diversity policy should be taken into account when preparing your application
• Detailed measures that you will take to boost female participation in the event should be clearly identified in the application. AMSI strongly recommends the inclusion of at least one woman on the organising committee. This has been shown to boost female participation.
• For maths events AMSI recommends organisers contact the AustMS office to request a list of AustMS members who identify through MathSciNet codes with the themes of the workshop. Organisers can then issue personal and group invitations to prospective participants. This may help improve female attendance.
• Provide childcare information to potential registrants.

• AustMS provides an annual subvention to support regular meetings held by Special Interest Groups. Therefore an AustMS contribution will not normally be provided to workshop applications made by AustMS Special Interest Groups.
• Speaker support can be only used for travel and accommodation expenses for approved invited speakers. A clear case must be made for each of the speakers based on their impact on the field. Speaker seniority is not a necessary condition of support.
• AMSI will pay up to the total amount of the local airfare for speakers attending workshops of at least two days in length.
• For a workshop of N days we will pay at most N+1 nights’ accommodation.
• AMSI/AustMS approval is required for changes to funded speakers.
• Discretionary spending can be used on expenses directly related to the workshop but NOT on per diems or business class fares. Typically this amount will be around 15–20% of the approved total. This enables organisers to negotiate with the supported speakers so as to free up discretionary funding when it is required.
• Our rules linking workshop duration to N+1 nights’ accommodation must be respected in the use of these discretionary funds.
• AMSI and AustMS do not generally fund recurrent national workshops. Seed funding to establish new series is possible. The case must be made for the individual workshop. Please contact the SAC Chair before making an application.
• Recurrent international workshops which visit Australia from time to time may be supported. The case must be made for the individual workshop. Please contact the SAC Chair before making an application.
• AMSI does not fund annual meetings/conferences of learned societies.
