Ridmala Abeysinghe Arachchige
RMIT University
I am a first-year undergraduate student at RMIT University in Melbourne, pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics. Originally from Sri Lanka, I am an international student excited to delve into the vibrant academic atmosphere of Australia.
My academic interests lie at the intersection of mathematics and statistics. Currently, I am laying the groundwork for my future endeavors, which include pursuing a PhD focused on measuring community evolution in social networks. This area of research captivates me due to its potential to unravel the intricate dynamics of human interactions and societal changes through quantitative analysis.
- Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)
I’m primarily focused on mathematics and statistics. Mathematics is essentially the language of patterns and relationships, while statistics deals with analyzing data to make sense of the world around us.
Specifically, I’m interested in applying mathematical and statistical techniques to understand social networks. These networks represent how individuals or entities are connected to each other, whether it’s through friendships, interactions on social media, or collaborations in academic or professional settings.
Well, social networks are everywhere in our daily lives, from how we communicate with friends and family to how information spreads online. By studying these networks mathematically, we can gain insights into how communities form, evolve, and interact.
For example, understanding community evolution in social networks can have implications for various fields such as sociology, psychology, public health, and even business. It can help us identify influential individuals or groups within a community, track the spread of ideas or diseases, and even predict trends or behaviors.
In simpler terms, my work aims to uncover the underlying patterns in how people connect and interact with each other, with the goal of making sense of complex social dynamics and ultimately contributing to a better understanding of human society.
- How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
My journey into mathematics, statistics, and data science has been a combination of personal interest and inspiration from various sources.
From a young age, I’ve always been fascinated by numbers and patterns. I found joy in solving mathematical puzzles and exploring the beauty of mathematical concepts. As I progressed through my education, I realized that mathematics wasn’t just about calculations; it was a powerful tool for understanding the world around us.
In high school, I had an inspiring mathematics teacher who encouraged me to delve deeper into the subject and explore its applications beyond the classroom. Their passion for mathematics ignited my curiosity and motivated me to pursue further studies in the field.
Overall, it’s been a combination of personal curiosityand supportive mentors in the field that led me to pursue mathematics, statistics, and data science as my academic and professional path.
