Yawei Chen
The University of Adelaide
Yawei Chen is a student at the University of Adelaide studying a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences (Hons) under an articulation agreement between the University of Adelaide and Ocean University of China. She completed the first two years of her degree at Ocean University in China and has now moved to Australia to complete a further two years of study at The University of Adelaide.
1. Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)
Mathematical modelling of Earth’s climate receives interest because of recent concern about the planet’s climatic response to human’s activities. I am researching the theoretical and numerical modelling of ice dynamic system during my honours year.
2. How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I started to be interested in mathematics when I was in high school. During my bachelor, my lecturers at university who have inspired me to continue pursuing mathematics.
3. You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2024. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?
I am grateful for the travel grant as it allowed me to attend the Summer School in person. I moved to Australia from China just over one year ago (articulating from studying mathematics at Ocean Universityof China), and in-person participation is important for her to learn in an effective manner.
4. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
I think the most valuable part was the people I met. I have learned a lot from lecturers and my peers.
5. In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
My research will benefit from what I learned in AMSI Summer School. Moerover, Summer School also helps me fulfil some of the course work requirements for my degree, meaning that I can focus more on my research during the following semester.
6. Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?
There are many types of industry opportunities available to mathematical science graduate. It clearly introduced industry opportunities in different fields and helps you better plan your own career.
7. What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2025? Should they apply and why?
I recommend them to attend in person if possible because you can study with people and discuss with them in a great environment.
8. What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?
My choice is to be a research-related role, either in academia or in the industry.
9. How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?
AMSI Summer School staffs are very well helpful and pofessional, with emails reminding you and instructing you on what to do before important dates or events.
10. Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2024?
Thank you for providing me with this experience.
