I am Jiabao (Claire) Li, an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Advanced Computing (Honours) program at The Australian National University, specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with a minor in Mathematics. My research interests include Logic for AI, Machine Learning for Theorem Proving, and Verification for Machine Learning Models. Currently, I serve as a Casual Sessional Academic for ANU’s Logic course, where I further strengthen my understanding of formal reasoning and its role in computational theory. I appreciate the opportunity to expand my mathematical knowledge at AMSI Summer School, as Mathematics forms the very foundation of both Machine Learning and Logic, and is key to developing reliable, transparent, and ethically grounded AI systems.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

I specialise in areas such as logic, discrete mathematics, and mathematical models. These subjects form the backbone of my research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning by providing rigorous frameworks for logical reasoning and proof. They have wide-ranging applications, from developing verification methods for machine learning algorithms to creating transparent AI systems. The main focus of my study is to formalize real-world tasks or mathematical formulae for AI/ML systems to solve and use formal logic methods to verify the outputs from AI/ML systems. How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

My journey into the mathematical sciences began with an early fascination for logic and computation. Courses like Logic and Games, Graphs, and Machines at ANU opened my eyes to the elegance and power of formal systems and discrete mathematical modelling. Exploring abstract concepts in algebra and type theory not only deepened my analytical skills but also ignited my passion for understanding the theoretical foundations that drive modern AI.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

Receiving the AMSI Summer School travel grant was critical to my participation. It offered the financial support I needed to attend the program in person without distractions, allowing me to fully participate in the offline sessions.

This support allowed me to interact with professionals in mathematical modelling and machine learning, as well as excellent and perceptive peers, increasing my learning experience and widening my research perspective.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The most significant takeaway was realizing how deeply interconnected advanced mathematical theories are with real-world applications in Machine Learning models and Time Series Analysis. This experience reinforced my belief that a solid mathematical foundation is essential for innovative and ethical AI research.

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Attending AMSI Summer School has provided me with a strong foundation in advanced mathematical concepts, which are critical for both academic and industry pursuits in AI and Machine Learning research. In the long term, this experience not only enriches my theoretical knowledge but also enhances my problem-solving and analytical skills, paving the way for innovative research and practical applications in machine learning and formal verification. Moreover, it has helped me build a robust network of peers and mentors that I expect will support collaborative projects and career opportunities well into the future.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Absolutely. The Careers Day program was particularly enlightening, offering insights into diverse career paths that leverage advanced mathematical sciences. It broadened my perspective on how disciplines of mathematical modelling and probabilistic reasoning, things I am passionate about, can translate into practical roles in industry, research, and technology development. The sessions and interactions with professionals have equipped me with a clearer understanding of my future career options and the skills required to thrive in them.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?

Absolutely. The Careers Day session was especially informative, providing insights into several career pathways that use sophisticated mathematical disciplines. It broadened my view on how mathematical modeling and probabilistic reasoning, two areas I am really interested in, may be applied to practical roles in industry, research, and technological development. The workshops and interactions with professionals have helped me have a better awareness of my potential job alternatives and the abilities needed to succeed in them.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in mathematics and its applications to apply to the AMSI Summer School in 2026. The curriculum provides a unique combination of challenging academic content and practical insights that can considerably improve your analytical skills. It’s a wonderful opportunity to expand your knowledge of advanced topics while also engaging with a thriving community of like-minded people. How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Connecting with the community was one of the Summer School’s most enjoyable experiences. Engaging with peers and mentors who share a strong interest in mathematics and its applications not only created a collaborative learning environment, but also provided a variety of perspectives on complicated topics. These encounters enriched my academic experience, increased my drive, and assisted me in developing professional relationships that I feel will have long-term advantages for both my current research and future career goals.
