Qiaosen Xu

University of Melbourne

I am currently a postgraduate student at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Mathematics and statistics in the direction of stochastic processes and statistics. I have a keen interest in time series. Time series data exist everywhere in our daily life, so it is crucial to study different time series data. Now I am studying the statistical and time series modeling of climate variables.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

I am studying statistics, with a focus on Bayesian statistical methods, risk mathematics, and time series analysis.  Bayesian statistics helps us make decisions under uncertainty by updating our beliefs as new data comes in.  Risk mathematics is essential in finance and insurance, helping to assess and manage potential losses.  Currently, I am studying time series analysis, which is widely used in economics, finance, and environmental sciences to analyze and forecast trends over time.  These areas of mathematics have real-world applications, such as improving financial models, predicting climate patterns, and optimizing decision-making in uncertain environments.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

I was first introduced to statistics by a senior student in my university who was deeply passionate about data analysis.  She was working on a project that used statistical modeling to analyze economic trends, and I was fascinated by how she could extract meaningful insights from raw data.  She once showed me how Bayesian statistics could update predictions in real-time.  Her enthusiasm and ability to apply mathematics to solve real-world problems inspired me to dive deeper into statistics.  Since then, I’ve been captivated by the power of data and its ability to inform better decisions in various fields.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

Receiving the Travel Grant to attend the AMSI Summer School 2025 was crucial in making my participation possible.  The grant allowed me to focus entirely on learning and engaging with the program without financial concerns.   Attending in person was a huge advantage—it gave me the opportunity to interact with peers and researchers face-to-face, exchange ideas, and build connections that wouldn’t have been as meaningful in a virtual setting.   The collaborative environment and in-depth discussions enriched my learning experience and broadened my perspective on applications of mathematics and statistics.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

For me, the breakfast meeting at the opening ceremony provided me with a variety of interesting topics and knowledge in other fields, and made me meet friends in the same subject but different schools!

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Attending the Summer School, with courses aligned with my research interests, offers long-term benefits. The knowledge I gain will strengthen my research, the networking opportunities may lead to future collaborations, and the experience will help me stay up to date in my field, supporting my continuous academic growth.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Yes, attending AMSI Summer School and participating in the Career Day program gave me a clearer picture of the various career paths available to math graduates. These conferences provide valuable insights into industrial and private sector opportunities, as well as the skills and knowledge required by employers. Hearing from professionals in the field has helped me see how my research can be applied to society.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?

They should all come because there are so many interesting people to meet.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

I’m not sure yet. I want to be a data analyst in the future.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School greatly enriched my experience.  Engaging with like-minded peers, lecturers, and industry professionals created a supportive learning environment where I could exchange ideas, discuss research, and gain new perspectives.

Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2025?

Everything is great and I thank AMSI for giving me the opportunity to attend this wonderful summer school.
