Wren Huang
Monash University
I am a Master of Financial Mathematics student at Monash University with a background in Banking, Finance, and Accounting. My passion for applying mathematical models to finance led me to pursue this field, aiming for a career in quantitative finance, risk management, or data analytics. Here at the AMSI Summer School, I took the Topics in Data Science & Machine Learning unit.
Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)
I study financial mathematics, which involves applying mathematical models to analyze financial markets, manage risk, and optimize investment strategies. This field is crucial for developing models that improve financial decision-making, such as pricing financial derivatives, managing portfolios, and assessing market risks. The broader impact includes more stable financial systems, improved risk assessment for businesses, and innovations in fintech that enhance economic efficiency.
How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
My background in Banking, Finance, and Accounting initially introduced me to financial models and market dynamics. However, I became increasingly interested in the mathematical structures underlying these models. The ability to use quantitative techniques to predict trends, assess risks, and optimize strategies fascinated me. This curiosity, combined with my exposure to financial modeling and programming, led me to pursue financial mathematics.
You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?
The Travel Grant was instrumental in allowing me to attend the program without financial constraints. Attending in person was a significant advantage as it provided direct interaction with lecturers and peers, enabling rich discussions, networking, and collaboration. The in-person experience fostered a stronger academic and professional network, making the learning experience more engaging and insightful.
What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
The most valuable aspect was the opportunity to engage with experts in the field and learn from their practical insights. The workshops and lectures deepened my understanding of complex models, and the networking opportunities helped me connect with like-minded peers who share my interest in quantitative finance and risk management.
In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
Attending AMSI Summer School has expanded my academic and professional network, introduced me to cutting-edge research in financial mathematics, and reinforced my career aspirations. The knowledge gained will be beneficial in my future research and industry applications, particularly in roles related to quantitative finance and risk assessment.
Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?
Yes, the Careers Day provided valuable insights into the diverse career paths available in quantitative finance, data analytics, and risk management. Learning from industry professionals about their career journeys and the practical applications of financial mathematics helped me refine my career direction and explore new opportunities in the field.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?
I would highly encourage students to apply. AMSI Summer School offers a unique opportunity to deepen mathematical knowledge, network with leading researchers, and gain exposure to career opportunities in mathematical sciences. The experience is intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding, making it a worthwhile investment for anyone interested in applying mathematics in real-world contexts.
What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?
I aim to pursue a career in quantitative finance, risk management, or data analytics, leveraging mathematical models to solve complex financial problems. My goal is to work in a role that involves financial modeling, algorithmic trading, or risk assessment, where I can apply my quantitative skills to optimize financial decision-making.
How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?
Being part of the AMSI community allowed me to engage in discussions, collaborate on problem-solving, and learn from peers with diverse academic backgrounds. This environment fostered knowledge-sharing and provided valuable networking opportunities that will be beneficial in both my academic and professional journey.
Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2025?
I am grateful for the opportunity provided by AMSI and the Travel Grant, which made my participation possible. The program was well-structured, intellectually enriching, and provided an excellent platform to connect with experts and peers. I would highly recommend it to future students interested in mathematical sciences.
