Vishmi Fernando

RMIT University

Vishmi is a PhD student in Mathematical Sciences at RMIT University. Her research interests lie in Optimisation and Operations Research, focusing on vehicle routing problems. Currently, she is working on a nurse routing and scheduling problem for chemotherapy and other infusion treatments occurring periodically to be delivered at home. In this work, she explores how the problem can be formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Program and develops solution algorithms to solve it in a timely manner.

Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes (how you would explain your work and studies to friends who don’t study maths?)

My research focuses on real-world challenges, such as scheduling, logistics, or optimising resources, in a more efficient way. To do this, I formulate a model for the problem and try to find a good solution as fast as possible.

How did you get into the mathematical sciences? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

Maths was my favourite subject in school. I found it really satisfying to figure out the solution to a problem, and I thought I wanted to keep doing it.

Winter School is designed to give students a deeper understanding of their area of research and expose them to others working in different fields/industries. Tell me about your Winter School experience. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The most valuable part of the program to me was meeting fellow mathematics students from across the country and building new connections. This year’s theme was especially relevant to my research, and I gained exposure to a wide range of new ideas and approaches that I can incorporate into my current work and future projects.

What was your main take away/s from AMSI-MATRIX Winter School? Something you learnt? A connection you made? Do you have new ideas for your work/research or see it in a new light?

I learned how optimisation techniques can be applied in a variety of settings, which really made me think in new ways and approach problems differently.

You received a grant to attend AMSI-MATRIX Winter School. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?

The travel grant was essential for my ability to attend and fully participate in the program, as it removed the financial barriers. Having accommodation arranged for all participants in the same place made it much easier to connect and build relationships with others, which enriched the overall experience.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Winter School? How would you describe the conference to them?

It is a great way to spend two weeks exploring new topics that interest you and connecting with peers who share similar interests, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

Where do you want the mathematical sciences to take you? Where do you see yourself in five, ten years time?

I see myself applying the skills that I have developed over the years to solve optimisation problems in industry.

Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the travel grant or AMSI-MATRIX Winter School?

I am thankful for the opportunity to participate in the Winter School, and I hope the program continues so that more students can benefit in the future.
