Noah Castle
University of Newcastle
I am a mathematician from the University of Newcastle currently completing my Honours. I am researching a phenomenon called periodic revivals which shows up in periodic dispersive pdes.
I have always enjoyed studying math from high school and like the logical approach to solving problems and they way it models real life behaviour. Since then I have enjoyed studying math at university, particularly the applied aspects, and hope to be able to apply my learning in industry.
Outside of University I enjoy playing a variety of sports and enjoy travelling to different locations.
Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes
I am studying a phenomenon in PDEs called periodic revivals. Pdes are a math equation that can model real world behaviours like the dispersion of heat, so understanding how they work can be very useful
How did you get into the mathematical sciences? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I always liked math but I had a particularly passionate High School Math Teacher who was really inspiring to me. I wanted to continue math to see how far I could take it.
You received a grant to attend AMSI Summer School. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?
It was definitely an advantage to go in person otherwise I would not have made so many good connections with the other students. Being in that kind of environment is a very good motivator to study hard. If I didn’t get the grant I would not have been able to go
What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
Making hopefully lifelong friends and connections with people around Australia who I can reconnect with in the future.
In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
I got a better idea of what kind of math is available to work with in the industry and the types of jobs, so I think that will come in handy when applying at the end of my Honours
Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?
Definitely, there were many different groups there at the Career day and talking to them has better equipped me to knowing how to prepare when applying to them in the future. I learnt what they were expecting from Graduate students and the skills I need. I also learnt about the types of jobs available so I can do my research early.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2027? Should they apply and why?
Definitely apply, whether you need to take a class for credit or not. It’s a great experience that puts you out of your comfort zone but with that allows you to grow as a person and a mathematician. The coursework is challenging but rewarding and it feels good to work hard on content you’re interested in. Also being able to work alongside other students that feel the same way is a great experience.
What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?
I would like to get a job after completing my Honours and be able to use the math skills that I’ve polished in my career
How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?
It was a big motivating factor having people to rely on when studying and the AMSI support staff were also super helpful and accommodating with any questions or concerns
Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2026?
Thank you for the opportunity to experience Monash university in person I recommend others to try it for themselves 😊
