Yuji Deng

University of Sydney

Yuji is an economics student at the University of Sydney, specialising in econometrics and financial economics. She has a particular interest in time series forecasting, where she applies quantitative and statistical methods to analyse and predict economic and financial trends.

Her interest in this field developed through her studies in statistics and data analysis. She is particularly interested in applying mathematical and econometric tools to better understand financial markets and economic dynamics.

Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes

I study economics with a focus on econometrics. My current work involves time series forecasting, where I apply quantitative and statistical methods to analyse and predict economic trends.

More broadly, my studies focus on using data-driven approaches to better understand how economic systems evolve over time. By building models and analysing patterns in data, I aim to generate insights that can help explain and anticipate real-world economic behaviour. In this way, my work connects mathematical methods with practical applications that are relevant to a wider community.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

I became interested in econometrics through my studies in economics, particularly in courses related to statistics and data analysis. I was drawn to the way quantitative methods can be used to provide structured insights into complex economic problems.

Over time, this interest developed into a stronger focus on modelling and forecasting, especially through time series analysis. I enjoy the combination of theoretical reasoning and practical application, and I am motivated by the opportunity to use data to better understand and interpret economic phenomena.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2026. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

The travel grant was very important for me, as it significantly reduced the financial burden of attending the AMSI Summer School. Without this support, it would have been much more difficult for me to participate in the program.

The funding allowed me to fully engage with the academic content and take advantage of the learning opportunities without financial concerns. Attending the program in person was also particularly valuable, as it enabled direct interaction with lecturers and other participants, making the overall experience more engaging and rewarding.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

I found all aspects of the program valuable. In particular, the course Machine Learning in Financial Mathematics strengthened my understanding of how quantitative methods can be applied in financial contexts.

In addition, interactions with other participants gave me new perspectives and ideas, making the overall experience both engaging and insightful.

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

The Summer School helped me improve my analytical skills and gain a clearer direction in my studies. It also deepened my understanding of how econometrics connects with mathematics, which will be important for my future learning.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

The Careers Day gave me useful insights into potential career paths, especially in data science and finance. It helped me understand how my skills can be applied in different industries.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2027? Should they apply and why?

I would recommend this program to others. It provides a great opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, exchange ideas, and learn from each other in a supportive environment.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

My career goals are not yet fully decided, but I am interested in roles where I can apply my quantitative and analytical skills, particularly in areas related to data analysis or econometrics.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

I met many participants from different backgrounds, and these interactions were both helpful and inspiring. It was a great environment for sharing ideas and learning from others.

Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2026?

I would like to sincerely thank AMSI for organising this program and for the support through the travel grant. It was a valuable and enriching experience.
