I hold a bachelor’s degree majoring in Pure Mathematics from the University of Sydney and a Master’s degree in Financial Mathematics from the University of Queensland. 1. Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes (how you would explain your work and studies to friends who don’t study maths?)
I’m studying Financial Mathematics, which involves applying mathematical methods to financial markets and instruments. My current research focuses on pricing snowball options, a type of exotic financial derivative. Snowball options have complex features, like knock-in and knock-out barriers, which make their valuation challenging.
To make it simple, think of snowball options as special contracts that depend on the path of stock prices. I’m using advanced mathematical models and simulations to determine their value and understand how different factors, like stock price changes or market volatility, impact their price. This includes analyzing the Greeks, which are metrics that show how sensitive the option’s price is to various factors.
The goal of my research is to provide more accurate pricing and better risk management strategies for these complex financial products. This can help investors and financial institutions make informed decisions and manage their risks more effectively.
2. How did you get into the mathematical sciences? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I got into the mathematical sciences during my high school years, where I found myself fascinated by the logical structure and problem-solving aspects of mathematics. A pivotal moment was when my math teacher introduced me to the beauty of pure mathematics through complex problem-solving exercises. Their passion and enthusiasm for the subject were incredibly inspiring and played a significant role in my decision to pursue mathematics further.
Additionally, I was always intrigued by how mathematics could be applied to real-world problems, especially in finance. This curiosity led me to explore financial mathematics, where I saw the potential to combine my love for pure math with practical applications in financial markets. The idea of using advanced mathematical techniques to solve complex financial problems was both challenging and exciting, and it solidified my decision to specialize in this field.
3. Winter School is designed to give students a deeper understanding of their area of research and expose them to others working in different fields/industries. Tell me about your Winter School experience. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
My experience at Winter School was incredibly enriching. The program provided an in-depth understanding of mathematical applications in finance, which was directly aligned with my research interests. However, what made it truly valuable was the exposure to various other fields of mathematics.
Learning about different types of mathematics broadened my perspective and showed me how diverse and interconnected mathematical disciplines can be. Additionally, the opportunity to connect with students from different mathematical backgrounds was invaluable. These interactions allowed me to exchange ideas, gain new insights, and build a network of peers who are passionate about mathematics.
Overall, Winter School not only deepened my knowledge in financial mathematics but also enriched my understanding of the broader mathematical landscape and fostered meaningful connections with fellow students.
4. What was your main take away/s from AMSI Winter School? Something you learnt? A connection you made? Do you have new ideas for your work/research or see it in a new light?
My main takeaway from the AMSI Winter School was the realization of how interconnected various fields of mathematics are and how they can be applied to solve complex problems in finance. One of the key things I learned was about the different mathematical techniques and models used in other areas, which gave me new perspectives and tools to apply to my own research on snowball options.
Additionally, I made several valuable connections with peers and professionals from different mathematical backgrounds. These interactions not only expanded my network but also provided fresh insights and collaborative opportunities that I hadn’t considered before.
5. You received a grant to attend AMSI Winter School. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?
Receiving a grant to attend AMSI Winter School was crucial for my participation. The financial support made it possible for me to attend without worrying about the costs, allowing me to fully engage in the program and make the most of the learning opportunities available.
The grant enabled me to immerse myself in the experience, attend all the sessions, and participate in discussions and activities. It also facilitated my interactions with others studying in similar fields, as I could join networking events and collaborative sessions without any financial constraints.

7. Where do you want the mathematical sciences to take you? Where do you see yourself in five, ten years time?
I envision the mathematical sciences taking me into a career where I can continuously apply and expand my expertise in solving complex financial problems. In five to ten years, I see myself working in a leading financial institution or a research organization, developing advanced mathematical models and strategies for financial markets.
