Jiayue Ma

The University of Melbourne

I am currently a master’s student at the University of Melbourne, majoring in applied mathematics with a specialization in mathematical biology. My research focuses on inverse problems in dynamic systems, specifically using the Kalman Filter to estimate parameters in the Lorenz 63 system.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

My research focuses on inverse problems in dynamic systems, using the Kalman Filter for parameter estimation. This work is crucial in applications such as weather prediction, climate modeling, and biomedical signal processing. By improving parameter estimation techniques, we can enhance the accuracy of models that simulate real-world phenomena, leading to better decision-making in fields like meteorology, engineering, and medicine.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

I have been passionate about mathematics since high school, where I was captivated by its logical structure and problem-solving capabilities. My interest deepened during my undergraduate studies when I explored differential equations and numerical analysis.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

Receiving the AMSI Travel Grant was crucial in enabling me to attend the Summer School in person. Being physically present allowed me to engage more deeply with the lectures, participate in discussions, and collaborate with peers on problem-solving exercises. The networking opportunities were invaluable, as I connected with students and researchers working on similar topics, which would not have been as effective in an online setting.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The interactive lectures and workshops provided a deep dive into areas relevant to my research, particularly numerical methods and data assimilation. Additionally, engaging with peers and discussing research challenges helped me gain new perspectives and potential solutions for my work.

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Attending the AMSI Summer School has expanded my mathematical knowledge and strengthened my professional network.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Yes, the Careers Day provided valuable insights into career opportunities in both academia and industry. I gained a better understanding of how mathematical modeling and data analysis are applied in finance, engineering, healthcare, and environmental science.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?

I highly recommend applying for the AMSI Summer School 2026. It is a unique opportunity to learn from top experts, meet like-minded peers, and gain exposure to new mathematical techniques.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

I aspire to work in applied mathematics and data assimilation, either in academia or industry.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Engaging with students and researchers from diverse backgrounds allowed me to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and receive valuable feedback on my work.

Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2025?

I am very grateful for the AMSI Travel Grant, which made my participation in the Summer School possible. The program was well-organized, with excellent lectures and engaging activities.
