AMSI grant recipient profile: Kunj Guglani

Kunj Guglani

Australian National University

I am currently pursuing a Master of Statistics at the Australian National University, where I hold the Vice Chancellor’s International Scholarship for academic excellence. My academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Physical Sciences from the University of Delhi and a Master of Science in Mathematics from Panjab University. Throughout my studies, I have actively engaged in research and academic competitions, securing top ranks and receiving multiple accolades.

My research interests lie in statistical modeling, probability theory, and data science applications. I have presented talks at national and international conferences, including The Influence of Statistics Anxiety on Academic Learning at the Early Career and Student Statisticians Conference 2024. Additionally, I have contributed to digital education initiatives at ANU, supporting the enhancement of learning resources.

Beyond academics, I am passionate about teaching and mentoring students in mathematics and statistics. With experience in tutoring and educational program development, I aim to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications. My long-term goal is to contribute to research, education, and industry by leveraging statistical insights for real-world problem-solving.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts on the broader community?

I specialize in statistics and data science, focusing on machine learning, time series analysis, and statistical modeling. These fields have transformative applications in industries such as finance, healthcare, education, and environmental science. By leveraging statistical techniques, we can extract meaningful insights from data, optimize decision-making, and drive innovation in various domains, ultimately benefiting society.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you?

My passion for mathematics and statistics developed through my love for problem-solving and logical reasoning. During my undergraduate studies, I was drawn to probability and statistical methods, which encouraged me to pursue further specialization. As I explored real-world applications—such as data-driven decision-making and educational research—I became fascinated with the potential of statistics in solving complex problems. Supportive mentors and my involvement in research presentations further solidified my interest in the field.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate, and meet others in similar fields?

The AMSI Travel Grant was crucial in enabling me to attend the program in person. As an international student, financial constraints can be a challenge, and this grant made it possible for me to engage fully in the coursework and networking opportunities. Additionally, AMSI gave me the chance to study Topics in Data Science and Machine Learning, which I couldn’t take at my university due to course requirements. Attending in person allowed me to interact with leading experts and peers, creating an enriching academic and professional experience.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The most valuable aspect of the AMSI Summer School was the opportunity to participate in participant talks, including presenting my own talk. The sessions were inspiring, showcasing diverse applications of mathematical sciences and offering fresh perspectives on research topics. Learning from peers and experts through interactive discussions made the experience incredibly rewarding. Additionally, gaining hands-on experience in Python and machine learning was a highlight, as it expanded my technical skill set.

In the long term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Attending AMSI Summer School has not only strengthened my statistical and computational skills but has also broadened my professional network. The program has introduced me to cutting-edge methodologies and potential career pathways. The exposure to diverse research projects and discussions with peers and faculty members will continue to benefit my academic and professional growth in the years to come.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program aimed at helping students explore career paths in industry and private sector research. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in mathematical sciences after attending?

Absolutely. The Careers Day program provided invaluable insights into career opportunities within industry and private-sector research. It highlighted how mathematical and statistical skills are highly sought after in various fields, including finance, technology, healthcare, and consulting. Hearing from professionals who transitioned from academia to industry gave me a clearer perspective on potential career paths.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply, and why?

I strongly encourage students to apply for AMSI Summer School 2026. It’s an incredible opportunity to gain advanced knowledge, explore new areas of mathematics and statistics, and connect with a diverse community of peers and experts. If there is a subject you couldn’t take at your university due to course constraints, this program might provide you with the chance to study it in a structured and immersive environment—just like I had the opportunity to study machine learning and Python.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

I aspire to work as a statistician and researcher, applying advanced statistical techniques to solve complex problems. My long-term goal is to contribute to both academia and industry, particularly in fields such as education, healthcare, and data-driven decision-making. I am also passionate about mentoring students and fostering a deeper appreciation for mathematics and statistics.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

The AMSI community played a significant role in enhancing my experience. The opportunity to engage with fellow students, faculty members, and industry professionals fostered stimulating discussions and collaborations. The participant talks were especially inspiring, as they showcased innovative applications of mathematical sciences and encouraged knowledge-sharing among peers.
