Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community?
My work is in optimisation, specifically in the mining industry. We look at maximising out and efficiency of mining operations by minimizing costs, increasing productivity, and minimizing waste. While optimization can have positive impacts on the mining industry and its stakeholders, it can also have significant impacts on the broader community, including the environment, social well-being, and economic sustainability.
How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
My high school mathematics methods teach Ms Turnor was a huge part of me discovering my love for mathematics. Her passion that was conveyed through her incredible teaching skills made me fall in love with what mathematics could explain about the world around us.
You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2023. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?
I’ve created a great social network Australia wide now and sparked new friendships. These people shared so many common interests, but we also had our differences which was good to discover new things. The in-person style was easily the most beneficial part of the trip.
What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
Traveling to a city on the other side of Australia that I had only visited once before. It was the first time traveling without someone I was previously close with. I now have a much better idea of all the opportunities that are available to me. The trip persuaded me that research was not the field that I am meant to be in and that I should maybe explore the industry path.
In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
Future employment, friendships, knowledge, understanding on what path I should take in life.
Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Were you previously aware of the types of industry opportunities available to mathematical science graduates?
No, this day was beneficial for me. I think I will explore industry options now and until I graduate. Yes, the AMSI program was great in showing us how to go about securing these positions.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2024? Should they apply and why?
I have already recommended the program to multiple people as I see no negatives. It was a great experience, and I learnt a lot from it. They should apply and expect to learn a lot from it.
Where do you want the mathematical sciences to take you? Where do you see yourself in five, ten years’ time?
I would love to secure a position where I can work remotely, this would be great for traveling. I don’t know if I could sit in an office for years on end, so any alternative to this would be a great position to be in 5 or 10 years down the track.
