Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes
I am studying how the geometry of certain types of spaces is constrained by the topology (shape) of these objects. By studying geometric aspects such as curvature of a surface (and in particular how this curvature might evolve), we can get a better understanding of how the surface might be “twisted” in a certain sense.
How did you get into the mathematical sciences? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I enjoyed physics and maths in high school, so I found this to be the most natural pathway when starting uni.
You received a grant to attend AMSI Summer School. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?
I wouldn’t have participated without it. I see no benefit in attending online as it loses all the best parts of in person lectures.
What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
Getting the opportunity to learn relevant topics before beginning my honours rather than during was helpful.
In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
It was helpful being exposed to topics I might not have been otherwise, and also getting the chance to meet people I may interact with professionally in the future.
Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?
No. I was already aware of such career paths and am no more interested than before.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2027? Should they apply and why?
Sure, if there’s a class you’re interested in and you have mates going, definitely.
What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?
Hopefully continuing on to do a PhD and see from there.
How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?
It was nice meeting others with similar interests and learning about their fields of research.
