Leading mathematicians from over 13 countries have descended on the Australian Capital today for the launch of MathsFest 2016.
Newly established by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS), the three-week multi-event raises the bar for future engagement with the global mathematical community.
“With an overall attendance pushing 500 and with twenty five of the world’s leading mathematicians delivering plenary lectures, MathsFest will have a lasting impact on our international collaborations,” says AMSI Director, Professor Geoff Prince.
This year’s event has opened with strong international attendance, thanks to the addition of two specialist workshops to the AustMS 60th annual meeting.
According to AustMS President, Professor Tim Marchant, as well as increasing the AustMS profile and annual meeting’s global impact, the expanded format has provided, “an important platform to open new opportunities for future international research collaborations with members.”
Professor Prince agrees, in particular he has welcomed greater collaboration with European colleagues.
“We are particularly pleased that the President of the European Mathematical Society, Professor Pavel Exner, has accepted our invitation to MathsFest,” said Professor Prince.
A Move Towards World-Class Infrastructure
Critically, MathsFest marks a significant step towards development of the national research centre proposed in the Academy of Science’s recent decadal plan for the mathematical sciences.
“Strategically delivered national capacity across the whole of the mathematical sciences is a successful driver of innovation in many OECD countries and Australia must move quickly to adopt this gold standard as part of the national innovation and science agenda,” said Professor Prince.
AMSI Research Report Launched to Praise
The event also marks the launch of AMSI’s annual Research Report. An overview of AMSI’s distributed research and training activities across its member network, this report highlights key areas of program growth and responses to critical issues facing the discipline.
“This report reflects the increasing impact of mathematical research in Australia and the quality and scope of the Institute’s world-class research and research training initiatives,” says Professor Prince.
