The University of Queensland
I am a mathematics student at the University of Queensland with a research focus in topology, the study of spaces and the properties that remain stable under continuous deformation. In short, I use mathematics to study abstract shapes. I approach topology from two complementary perspectives: first, investigating topological spaces themselves by understanding the structural properties that distinguish them; and second, exploring the many ways topology interacts with other areas of mathematics, including mathematical logic, measure theory, order theory, algebra, and geometry.
I am currently studying lattices, topological dualities, and universal algebra, and I am also the co-author of an upcoming paper on generalisations and converses of EVT. Outside of mathematics, I enjoy climbing, hiking, and reading, and I am still improving at all three. I also use my website to share my papers, current and past projects, and to connect with fellow mathematicians. My favourite treat is saffron ice cream, and my favourite musician is Ali Azimi.
Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes
I study mathematical logic and topology (the study of shapes) and their intersection. I guess in some way you could describe it as studying the shape of logic.
How did you get into the mathematical sciences? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I just really liked maths. I find it therapeutic.
You received a grant to attend AMSI Summer School. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?
It was a major factor in my learning experience! Seeing the lecturers in person and talking to like minded students was great! Cannot imagine how it would have been without the grant.
What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
To be completely honest, while attending the program some terrible events took place in my home country Iran. The positive environment of the program provided me with a much needed distraction from the world.
In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
The connections that were built outside of the classes.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2027? Should they apply and why?
Do it. Its genuinely a great opportunity.
What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?
Becoming a researcher.
How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?
As I mentioned before, it was the best part of the experience!
