Thanh Long (Oliver) Vu

Queensland University of Technology

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) at Queensland University of Technology, where I previously completed a Bachelor of Data Science. In addition to my academic background, I have professional experience in Data Science with PwC Australia and Suncorp Group. Outside of mathematics, I am passionate about travel and learning new languages, and I am currently on a quest to become fluent in Mandarin.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

I’m studying Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC), a statistical method used in scenarios where it’s hard to evaluate likelihood functions directly, which is common in fields like finance and biology. Particularly, Multifidelity ABC allows us to speed up traditional ABC methods. My research focuses on improving the efficiency of Multifidelity ABC by using machine learning. This work has the potential to accelerate complex simulations and make advanced statistical methods more accessible for real-world applications, ultimately supporting better decision-making in diverse fields.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

After a year of working as a Software Engineer in Vietnam, I realized I was drawn to more scientific pursuits and decided to begin my Bachelor of Data Science at QUT. During my studies, I participated in a Vacation Research Experience Scheme under the supervision of Dr. David Warne, where we worked on Approximate Bayesian Computation. His mentorship and his work greatly inspired me to go deeper into mathematics, which led me to pursue a Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) now to advance my skills and knowledge in this field.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

The Travel Grant significantly reduced the financial burden of attending the program in another city (Sydney). It enabled me to participate fully and make valuable connections through in-person interactions.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The most valuable part of the program for me is the opportunity to learn from professors all across Australia and witness their dedication to mathematical sciences. I look forward to learning from them and drawing inspiration from their expertise and passion.

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

I enrolled in Statistical Modelling for Time-Series and Numerical Solutions of PDEs, which align well with my long-term career goals in Data Science. In the short term, this knowledge will support my role as a Data Scientist, while in the long term, AMSI Summer School will help me as I pursue a PhD, offering valuable connections and experience with a research-focused community.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Absolutely. I’ve always wanted to explore career opportunities for Maths graduates beyond the traditional Data Science roles. The Careers Day program gave me valuable insights into different paths in industry and private sector research, which has broadened my perspective and increased my options for the future.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?

I highly encourage anyone considering it to apply. There’s no better place to meet like-minded people, expand your knowledge, and experience an enjoyable learning environment. It’s a unique opportunity you won’t want to miss.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

Currently, I’m focused on becoming a Data Scientist in a financial firm, where I can apply my skills in statistical modeling and data analysis. In the longer term, I’m interested in pursuing a PhD in Mathematical Sciences to deepen my expertise and contribute to research.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Connecting with a diverse group of participants from various institutions was one of the highlights of the experience. It was a great opportunity to gain new perspectives and learn about different approaches, which will be valuable as I plan my long-term career in mathematical sciences.

Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2025?

I would like to extend my thanks to the AMSI Summer School 2025 organizing team. The experience was well-structured and incredibly enriching. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it.
