I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computing at Australian National University, with a minor in mathematics. I am curious to explore new ideas and knowledge. I love the challenge of breaking down complex problems and finding meaningful solutions. I am particularly interested in data-driven problem solving and its applications in various domains, from artificial intelligence to computational mathematics. My goal is to use my analytical skills to develop innovative solutions that can make a real-world impact.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

I am pursuing a major of intelligent system in computing, focusing on the studying of machine learning and AI. The mathematics I study includes topics like linear algebra, probability, optimization, and differential equations—foundational tools for developing intelligent models.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

My interest in mathematics and statistics grew from a fascination with problem-solving. The professor of basic mathematics course inspired me a lot. Exploring how data can provide insights into real-world issues, deeply fascinated me.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

The AMSI Summer School 2025 Travel Grant was invaluable in allowing me to attend and fully engage in the program. It enabled me to participate in lectures and labs without financial constraints, ensuring I could make the most of the learning experience. Attending in person was a significant advantage, as it provided opportunities to connect with peers and exchange ideas. The interactive environment and networking opportunities greatly enriched my experience.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The most valuable part of the program for me was the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in both statistics and machine learning while also engaging with peers from diverse academic backgrounds and institutions. Learning from experts in the field helped strengthen my technical skills, while discussions with fellow participants provided fresh perspectives and insights.

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Attending the AMSI Summer School has long-term benefits, particularly in shaping my career path. Participating in the career fair gave me valuable insights into different career opportunities, industry expectations, and potential pathways in mathematics, statistics, and machine learning. Additionally, the knowledge gained and the connections made with peers will continue to support my academic and professional growth in the future.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Attending the AMSI Summer School’s Careers Day gave me a much clearer understanding of the diverse career paths available in mathematical sciences, industry, and private sector research. Learning from professionals and industry leaders provided valuable insights into job opportunities, skill requirements, and future trends.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?

I would definitely encourage anyone considering AMSI Summer School 2026 to apply! It’s a fantastic opportunity to deepen your knowledge in mathematics and related fields while connecting with like-minded peers and experts. The program offers high-quality courses, networking opportunities, and career insights that can be invaluable for both academic and professional growth.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

My current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector involve pursuing a role related to machine learning. However, I am still exploring specific opportunities within this field, as there are many factors to consider.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Engaging with peers from different universities and backgrounds allowed me to exchange ideas, gain new perspectives, and build valuable academic and professional connections. Overall, being part of this community enhanced both my knowledge and my confidence in exploring opportunities in the mathematical sciences.

I had a fantastic experience with AMSI Summer School 2025 and the AMSI Travel Grant. The Travel Grant made it possible for me to fully participate and engage with the community. Overall, I highly recommend this program to anyone interested in advancing their knowledge in mathematical sciences.
