Xuan Liu

Australian National University

I am currently undertaking a Bachelor of Software Engineering at ANU, with a minor in mathematics. My studies focus on discrete mathematics, computational logic, software design and algorithm development. Through this blend of theoretical rigour and practical engineering, I aim to create efficient, innovative solutions that address real-world challenges.

Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

I am primarily studying discrete mathematics, which forms the backbone of computational logic, computer theory, and algorithms. Discrete math provides the theoretical foundations for designing efficient algorithms, ensuring computer security, and solving complex problems in software engineering. Its applications are benefiting the broader community by improving the reliability and efficiency of digital systems.

How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

My interest in math was triggered by a basic math course at ANU, taught by a professor who focused not merely on problem-solving but on understanding the origins and rationale behind mathematical formulas. This approach sparked my curiosity and instilled a deep appreciation for the beauty and logic of mathematics, inspiring me to explore further into the realms of statistics and data science.

You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2025. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

Receiving the Travel Grant for AMSI Summer School 2025 was pivotal—it enabled me to live on campus, making it much easier to attend classes, actively participate in sessions, and engage with peers and experts in similar fields. The in-person experience significantly enhanced my learning, networking opportunities, and overall engagement with the program, proving to be a considerable advantage.

What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

The most valuable aspects for me were the hands-on labs and the unique opportunities provided by AMSI. The labs allowed us to tackle real-world problems using mathematical techniques, while the chance to communicate with professors and industry experts enriched my learning experience. These interactions deepened my practical understanding and inspired me to explore innovative applications of mathematical theories.

In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Attending Summer School offers long-term benefits by exposing us to advanced topics and knowledge not available at our home university. It broadens our academic horizons and deepens our understanding of the mathematical sciences. Additionally, meeting peers and experts from across Australia and the world has helped me build a valuable professional network that can lead to future research collaborations and career opportunities. This enriching experience not only enhances my technical skills but also prepares me for a successful future in the field.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Yes, the Careers Day program was extremely valuable. It offered direct opportunities to speak with industry professionals about company culture, work opportunities, and job requirements. I learned about hiring periods and the specific skills companies look for, which has greatly enhanced my ability to explore career options in the mathematical sciences.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2026? Should they apply and why?

Absolutely apply! The Summer School provides a valuable opportunity to dive deeper into mathematical topics not always covered at your home institution. You’ll gain hands-on experience through interactive labs, learn from leading experts, and network with students and industry professionals from across Australia (and even worldwide). This immersive environment can broaden your perspective, enhance your technical skills, and open doors for future research collaborations and career paths. If you’re passionate about mathematics and its applications, it’s an invaluable experience that can truly accelerate both your academic and professional growth.

What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

I plan to pursue a career that combines software engineering with advanced mathematical techniques, possibly in algorithm design, data analytics, or computational logic. I’m especially interested in working on projects that push the boundaries of efficiency, security, and problem-solving in modern computing systems.

How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Building connections with the Summer School community significantly enriched my experience. Engaging with like-minded peers and experts allowed me to exchange ideas, collaborate on problem-solving, and gain insights into different research and industry paths. Those valuable connections also offered me potential opportunities for working and doing research in the field I am interested.

Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2025?

The living conditions were absolutely great! I would consider applying again in the future, and I will recommend this to my peers as well.
