The evaluation of weight-of-evidence for low-template and/or degraded DNA profiles has been a subject of controversy over many years, not least because of the possibility of small amounts of “environmental” DNA affecting the sample, often referred to as “contamination”.  I will review the statistical models, and issues surrounding the presentation in court of results from such models.  I will draw on my experiences in the courts of several countries, predominantly the UK.
