I am trying to use machine learning algorithms to model the applications in real world. Specifically, I have one year research experience on weakly supervised learning. Now, my main research area is Graph Neural Networks, which could be used to model applications in the medical biology, such as drug repurposing, and gene regulatory networks modelling.
Can you give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential applications or outcomes
I am trying use the deep learning methods (especially the Graph Neural Networks) to accelerate the process of drug repurposing and gene regulatory networks modelling with good enough accuracy.
How did you get into the mathematical sciences/bioinformatics?
My supervisor is involved in the field, and I am also very interested in the bioinformatics.
What advice would you give to your younger self or others wanting to studying the mathematical sciences?
It is very important to understand basic biological knowledge and to master and mine biological knowledge in related application scenarios.
What was your motivation for attending AMSI BioInfoSummer?
My AMSI BioInfoSummer experience was great. I learnt cutting-edge knowledge and broadened my horizons. My motivation is to further research in this area. AMSI BioInfoSummer exposed me to cutting-edge knowledge and allowed me to network with peers. The speakers were also professional and selfless.
You received an AMSI BioInfoSummer travel grant to attend AMSI BioInfoSummer. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend and fully participate in the sessions throughout the week?
Very considerable funding makes it easier for those of us living and studying interstate to join in. Thank you very much for this funding.
What was your main take away from AMSI BioInfoSummer?
The main takeaway for me that I got to meet new friends and strengthen my direction of learning.
Where do you want the mathematical sciences to take you? Where do you see yourself in five or ten years’ time?
As a beginner, hope to learn more on this road.
