I am currently doing a Master by Research in number theory at UNSW Canberra, and I have completed a Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) at the University of Queensland

1. Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

I am interested in analytic number theory, a field where we study one of the most fundamental objects of mathematics: the integers. In particular, we use methods from either real or complex analysis to reveal patterns and interesting properties about all kinds of integers, such as primes and squares.

2. How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

I had not really gotten into mathematics until university. I initially chose to do a mathematics degree solely because of its versatility. However, soon after I started, I discovered the fun in the abstractness and rigorousness in mathematics. Thereafter, I decided to pursue an academic career in pure mathematics.

3. You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2024. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

Attending the program in-person offers a significant advantage by enabling direct interaction, immediate feedback and more effective networking that what would have been possible online.

4. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

For me, the most significant benefit of the program is the chance to engage with others who share similar interests in the field. It provides a fantastic platform to connect with like-minded individuals, including both students and academics.

5. In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

Establishing connections in the field can result in friendships, professional networks, and future collaborations, which are crucial elements of an academic career.

6. Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

While not directly relevant to my personal focus (an academic career), I appreciate the wide range of knowledge that can be gleaned from understanding various applications of mathematics.

7. What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2025? Should they apply and why?

Don’t be hesitant. Attending the Summer School not only provides knowledge in mathematics, but also offers great opportunities to establish connections with people who have similar interest.

8. What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

My current career ambitions involve conducting research and contributing to advancements in analytic number theory.

9. How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Interacting with students boosted my collaborative skills and expanded my network, while engaging with academics offered mentorship, enhancing my learning and career path.
