Huan Chen

Huan Chen is a student at Monash University. Even though his undergraduate degree is in engineering, he is working hard to pursue further studies in mathematics. He is interested in stochastic process and probability, particularly in random walk and financial math. He prefers to work with pen and paper as it brings inspiration. Currently, he is commencing his honours degree and plans to pursue a PhD degree in the future.
Can you give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to friends who don’t study maths)?
I am currently studying stochastic process and financial mathematics. This develops the mathematical model in the financial economics. For example, the Black Scholes model is used for price options contracts.
How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I found it interesting to investigate the real-world questions from a probability perspective.
You received a scholarship to attend AMSI Summer School 2022. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?
It is my pleasure to receive the scholarship to attend AMSI Summer School 2022. Scholarship motivates me to attend all events and classes during the program. AMSI Summer School 2022 will be one of my most memorable experiences of 2022.
The purpose of Summer School is to give students an opportunity to develop their mathematical skills, meet like-minded people and network with potential employers. What was the most valuable part of the program for you? Was it the course content or the people you met? Do you have new ideas for your work/research or see it in a new light?
Both course content and people I met are valuable. I have learned innovative knowledge and useful numerical simulation skill in my unit. At the same time, I have built connections with lots of like-minded people from different universities who are studying different types of mathematics.
Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Were you previously aware of the types of industry opportunities available to mathematical science graduates? Would you consider working with industry? Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?
Careers Day program was the best careers event I have ever attended. It clearly introduced industry opportunities in different fields and listed the required skills. I am now aware of what skills I should develop and focus on to work in industry in the future. I have learned the Monte Carlo simulation and Neural network model during the program, which has enhanced my personal skills to explore career options in the mathematical sciences.
AMSI Summer School was held as a virtual event. What was the biggest positive from your point of view holding it in this format and/or the biggest challenge?
As most part of the program was online, the virtual event really made people feel involved. Everyone with their cameras on could interact with others and build connections.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2022? Should they apply and why?
It is an amazing experience and worth applying. It would be a great opportunity for you to learn interesting knowledge, build networks and become aware of the relevant industry opportunities.
Where do you want the mathematical sciences to take you? Where do you see yourself in five, ten years time?
I believe I will pursue my studies to the PhD degree level in mathematical sciences after I graduate from honours degree.I would like to apply my mathematical knowledge in the financial field and present my unique insights.
