Australian National University

Can you describe the area of mathematics or bioinformatics you’re focusing on, and what you hope to achieve through your research?

My project is using bioinformatics to analyse DNA methylation data to attempt to identify biomarkers for Type-2 diabetes within a cohort of Aboriginal Australians.

What inspired you to pursue a career in bioinformatics or the mathematical sciences?

I was introduced to epigenomics in a lecture during undergrad and was instantly fascinated. I am also passionate about Aboriginal health equity and when the opportunity to combine the two was offered, I knew I couldn’t say no.

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Life is a journey, not a destination”, enjoy the process not just the result.

How was your AMSI BioInfoSummer experience?

Fantastic. I met so many interesting people and learnt a lot about a wide array of bioinformatic methodologies and analytical approaches.

You received an AMSI BioInfoSummer travel grant to attend in person. How did this grant impact your ability to participate fully?

As someone new to the field of bioinformatics, it was wonderful to meet and network with others in the field. I am based in Western Australia, so the three-hour time difference would have made joining virtually challenging.

What was the most valuable experience or takeaway from AMSI BioInfoSummer?

Learning about the diverse variety of technologies and analytical approaches that can be utilised to better understand a wide range of health conditions. The career networking evening was also a highlight, it was wonderful to see all of the potential careers bioinformatics can lead to.

Where do you see your journey in mathematical sciences taking you in the next 5–10 years?

I hope to continue in the field of genomics, working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on genomic health projects.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience or feedback on AMSI BioInfoSummer or the travel grant?

Thank you all for making this possible!
