Xiaoyi Wang

The University Of Adelaide

I am currently pursuing an Honours degree at the University of Adelaide, focusing on a project related to Bayesian analysis.

1. Give me a quick overview of the type of mathematics you are studying, and/or the aims of your research and its potential applications/outcomes.

I am researching whether there are differences in the thickness and volume of various brain regions after receiving treatment, as well as whether there are differences between the pain group and the control group. This will involve designing Bayesian analysis and creating a method to ascertain the significance of these differences.

2. How did you get into the mathematical sciences? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

During my high school years, I developed a strong interest in mathematics, which led me to pursue a degree in Mathematical Sciences at university. My high school math teacher provided me with significant inspiration, sparking my enthusiasm for data science and motivating me to strive for excellence in the field.

3. Summer School is designed to give students a deeper understanding of their area of research and expose them to others working in different fields/industries. Tell me about your Winter School experience. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

Many aspects of this project have been valuable – the lunchtime lectures and the career day, in particular. These activities have deepened my understanding of the field of mathematics and enhanced my interpersonal communication skills, which has been immensely beneficial to me.

4. What was your main take away/s from AMSI Summer School? Something you learnt? A connection you made? Do you have new ideas for your work/research or see it in a new light?

In class, I’ve made new friends and gained insights into the fields they are studying, broadening my knowledge. Additionally, I’ve learned various techniques in class, and I plan to apply Bayesian inference methods to my project.

5. You received a grant to attend AMSI Summer School. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields?

Attending in person has been very helpful for me. I appreciate the opportunity to participate and discuss interesting questions that everyone is researching. Furthermore, it has given me the chance to communicate with teachers face-to-face about problems and code.

6. What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School? How would you describe the conference to them?

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience as it provided me with a wealth of knowledge in Bayesian-related topics and coding skills. The lecturers at the summer school were very approachable and responsible, and you would enjoy interacting with them.

7. Where do you want the mathematical sciences to take you? Where do you see yourself in five, ten years time?

I enjoy working with data, so I hope to become a data analyst.
