Xuejing Huo

Macquarie University

Xuejing Huo is currently in the final year of her Master of Research degree in Pure Mathematics at Macquarie University. Her research field is Harmonic Analysis. Xuejing Huo obtained her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and applied mathematics from Hebei University in China in 2021. During her undergraduate studies, she displayed a keen interest in Pure Mathematics lectures, particularly in measure theory and functional analysis. This passion motivated her to pursue studies in harmonic analysis. In her spare time, she likes listening to music and learning to play musical instruments

1. Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)

My research focuses on harmonic analysis, a field dedicated to the study of quantitative bounds for functions lacking explicit expressions. A distinguishing aspect of harmonic analysis is its emphasis on locally elaborate estimates at the micro level, which significantly aids in achieving a thorough understanding of phenomena on a global or large scale. In this field, the theory of singular integrals and their commutators is one of the central topics in Euclidean spaces. For my master’s research, I am investigating this theory in the setting of stratified Lie groups, which have more abstract group structures than Euclidean spaces.  Such research helps us to further clarify and understand the close connection between geometric, algebraic, and analysis tools. Furthermore, due to the powerfulness of theories and tools, harmonic analysis is widely applied in the research of numerous fields, such as partial differential equations, complex analysis, and random processes.

2. How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?

I have bn interested in mathematics since I was in primary school, and I gradually progressed in math as I grew up. Mathematics is the most fundamental subject in all sciences, and I understand its significant contribution to the progress of sciences and the world. Therefore, I chose to major in mathematics during my undergraduate studies. I felt honoured to learn a great deal of mathematical knowledge. I enjoyed the process that focusing on solving a problem and the pleasure that followed after finally figuring it out. I aimed to study math at the highest possible level. However, I realized that the knowledge I gained during my undergraduate studies was not enough for me. Inspired by my lecturers and professors, who were my role models in studying and gave me unforgettable instructions in my life, I solidified the dream to pursue more profound knowledge in mathematics.

3. You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2024. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?

The experience was incredibly rewarding for me. It was a great chance to meet new friends who study different directions and from different universities. We studied and discussed mathematics questions after classes, and all had experienced an incredible period in Summer School.  It was a definite advantage to attend the program in-person. It was extremely helpful in enhancing my understanding of complex concepts and getting a view of recent research topics in my research field.

4. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?

I think the most valuable part of the program is the opportunity for face-to-face discussions with lecturers and fellow students. Engaging in these discussions not only allowed me to gain deeper insights into complex mathematical concepts but also provided a platform for exchanging ideas and perspectives. Their enthusiasm fuelled my own curiosity and drive to explore the subject further.

5. In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?

In the long-term, having attended Summer School in person provided me the opportunity to connect with many like-minded people. We keep contact each other, share our studying experience, and look forward to the next gathering.  Additionally, the knowledge and ideas presented in the lectures were invaluable and truly remarkable. I will always cherish this unforgettable experience.

6. Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?

Career Day program provides a platform for departments and companies to communicate directly with mathematics students.  I learned about there are various opportunities in industries. It has enhanced my overall understanding of mathematics-related industries and deepened my comprehension of employment situations.

7. What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for Summer School in 2025? Should they apply and why?

This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your insights in your research area. The studying experience at the Summer School will undoubtedly be unforgettable in your life. You may even meet your future research collaborators. It is definitely worth applying for Summer School 2025.

8. What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?

My current career ambition is to get into PhD to learn more in my research field. I wish I could be a mathematics lecturer after my PhD and engage in research works.

9. How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?

Connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School helped me make progress in my social skills and academic skills. AMSI Summer school offered a supportive environment where collaborative studying was encouraged, enabling me to enhance my understanding of knowledge in lectures.  The guidance and support provided by AMSI Summer School were invaluable as I navigated my academic and career goals.

10. Any other feedback/comments you would like to provide on the AMSI Travel Grant or AMSI Summer School 2024?

I would like to express my gratitude to AMSI for providing me with the excellent opportunity to attend AMSI Summer School 2024. The experience has been greatly beneficial for my personal and academic development. I sincerely appreciate the support and resources provided.
