I am currently pursuing an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Statistics at the University of Adelaide. I spent two years studying at a university in China and came to the University of Adelaide through the 2+2 joint training program with the Hyde College of Ocean University of China. I have had a passion for mathematics since childhood and aspire to continue my education to obtain a Ph.D. Currently, I am working on a project related to neural networks, which aligns with my future research goals.
1. Can you give me a quick rundown about the type of mathematics you are studying and its potential impacts for the broader community (think how you would explain your work and studies to others who don’t study maths)
I’m currently studying statistics, focusing on neural networks. In simple terms, I explore how machines learn and make predictions. This has broad applications, like early disease detection in healthcare, optimizing investments in finance, and advancing artificial intelligence in technology. In essence, my work aims to make data-driven decisions more effective and impactful for society.
2. How did you get into mathematics/statistics/data science? Was there someone or something that inspired you to this field?
I’ve loved mathematics since childhood. Inspired and encouraged by exceptional teachers, I actively participated in math competitions, which fueled my passion. Their influence solidified my decision to pursue mathematics. It’s the perfect blend of early fascination and mentorship that led me to this fulfilling path.
3. You received a Travel Grant to attend AMSI Summer School 2024. How important was this in terms of your ability to attend, fully participate in the program and meet others studying in similar fields? Do you think it was an advantage to attend the program in-person?
Receiving the Travel Grant for the AMSI Summer School 2024 was incredibly crucial for me. Without this support, I might have opted for online classes, undoubtedly compromising both my learning efficiency and outcomes. I firmly believe that timely feedback is paramount in the learning process.
Moreover, personally being present in Canberra for the program not only allowed me to fully engage but also provided a unique life experience. The opportunity to meet friendly new acquaintances from various Australian schools has been invaluable. Attending the program in person not only enhanced my participation but also enriched my overall learning journey, emphasizing the advantage of hands-on experiences and real-time interactions.
4. What was the most valuable part of the program for you?
The most valuable aspect of the program for me was the opportunity to attend lectures delivered by professors from top universities. Gaining insights from these distinguished educators not only expanded my knowledge base but also provided a unique perspective on the subject matter. Experiencing diverse teaching styles and approaches enriched my learning journey, making this exposure to top-tier academic instruction a truly invaluable part of the program.
5. In the long-term, what do you think are the benefits of having attended Summer School?
Attending the Summer School, with courses matching my research interests, brings long-term benefits. The gained knowledge enhances my research, networking opportunities may lead to collaborations, and the experience keeps me current in my field, fostering ongoing academic growth.

Summer School included a special Careers Day program which aims to help give students an idea of the kinds of career paths available to maths graduates in industry and private sector research areas. Do you feel better equipped to explore career options in the mathematical sciences after attending AMSI Summer School?
Certainly. The participation in AMSI Summer School’s Career Day not only made me aware of the significant demand for mathematics graduates in the job market but also provided me with a broader perspective on potential career options. This has boosted my confidence, believing that my mathematical skills can open up more possibilities for my future career path.

I would highly recommend applying for Summer School in 2025. 8. What are your current career ambitions in the mathematical sciences sector?
My career ambition in the mathematical sciences is to integrate statistical methods like time series analysis with the latest deep learning techniques. I aspire to become a data analyst proficient in cutting-edge technology, aiming to contribute innovative solutions to complex challenges in the field of data science.
9. How did connecting with the community at AMSI Summer School support your experience?
